Although slightly smaller, the British ship disabled USS Chesapeake with gunfire within the first few minutes. As Captain James Lawrence lay dying on the deck of the Chesapeake, his famous last words were “Don’t give up the ship!” Defeated and captured, Captain Lawrence died in agony three days later and was buried with full honors by his captors in Halifax.
